1969 Chevrolet Corvette 427 L88 - Not Intended For The Public
This is an original 427 Corvette Stingray, but not one of the 116 1969 Corvettes factory equipped with the RPO L88 427/430hp (500+hp) engine, nor is it one of the 17 L88's originally equipped with M40 Turbo Hydra-Matic Transmission. If it were, we'd be asking $650k to $850k. This 427 Tuxedo Black over Saddle Leather Stingray was born with a L36 390hp 427, which is no slouch either. The original, born with, engine along with the factory fuel tank, still wearing the remnants of its tank sticker, have been set side and are included in the sale.
The factory black paint is accented by Number 6 Owens Corning Fiberglass livery. White and red hood treatment with Pegasus head piece, trailed by ride strobe stripes that run from the Stinger hood to the rear deck lid. The tail panel is wrapped in coordinating white Stinger stripe, popularized by Baldwin Motion Phase III cars. The look is finished with white and red wheel well “eyebrow” stripes, “6” Meatballs on the doors, hood, and decklid, as well as sponsor logoed graphics. More than a sicker job, the unbaffled “off-road” Chrome side-pipes, VTO “Mini-lite” wheels shod in Good Year Eagle Sport Car Special Tires let you know this L88 means business. There is no mistaking this as anything other than a street legal race car.
This isn't any half-baked Resto-mod either. The build began with removing the body from the frame. The frame was then stripped and dipped, then powder coated. Everything is new, from the fuel tank to the brake lines. The basic suspension configuration is stock, newly rebuilt with various competition modifications. Same goes for brakes, the only visual cue departing from Day Two vintage race is the Wilwood Master cylinder. The beating heart of this L88 is a date code correct '69 512 block complete with correct GM “snowflake” casting heads. Pro-built and prepped, this motor was built for endurance racing, just as were the original L88 race cars. The L88 big block currently displaces 505 cubic inches and makes 750 horsepower with a 14:1 compression ratio. The car is far more than merely re-motored. The Corvette's original TH400 transmission was rebuilt to handle the extra power, including a 2800 stall converter and shift kit. The rearend, likewise original and built to handle the work at hand, now packs a 4.10:1 punch.
With over $200,000 invested, no detail was left unattended. Since these photos were taken, the final shakedown has been completed. Whether you are looking for an L88 tribute car to grace your garage or want to go SVRA racing with the baddest Corvette ever to hit the track, this L88 equipped 1969 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray 427 has 750 horses waiting for you to command.
